Abstract

Humor is a kind of communication phenomenon in which a person is able to see a funny side that can make him or her laugh. Verbal humor is a humor that expressed verbally. There are 8 types of verbal humor to analyze the verbal humor found in Ajo buset songs and Nedi gampo songs. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by downloading Ajo buset and Nedi gampo songs, listen to them repeatedly, identifying and putting them on table. The data were also analyzed by classifying the data, analyzing the data, deciding the research findings, and drawing the conclusion. The result in this research there are 37 verbal humor found in Ajo buset songs: pun (31,58%), satire (7,88%), parody (2,63%), Anecdote (10,52%), Irony (10,52%), Sarcasm (13,16%), tall tale (21,01%) and 30 verbal humor found in Nedi gampo songs: pun (26,67%), satire (36,67%), sarcasm (23,33%), and tall tale (13,33%). Then, there are 3 differences found between Ajo buset songs and Nedi gampo songs. First, Ajo buset songs are more modern than Nedi gampo songs. Second, Ajo buset songs make people laugh without purposes, while Nedi gampo songs give social critics. Last, Ajo buset songs are used many exaggeration and Nedi gampo used exaggeration minimally.

Abstract

This study focuses on cooperative principle violation done by the interviewee in answering the question in Rosi Talkshow at Kompas TV using Grice’s theory. The objectives of study are to discover the type of conversational maxim violation and the reason the interviewee violate the maxims in talk show. The data is utterances between the interviewer and the interviewee taken from internet. This research was conducted by using descriptive method. The results of the study show that there are four maxims of the cooperative principle violated by the interviewee in answering the question at Rosi Talkshow. These maxims are: (1) maxim of quality (2) maxim of quantity, (3) maxim of relation, and (4) maxim of manner. The dominant maxim that is violated is maxim of quantity which occurred 18 times, whereas the other maxim such as maxim of relation occurred 14 times, maxim of quality 9 times and maxim of manner only occurred 6 times. The most dominant type of maxim violation is quantity because the speakers give information as much as possible to make it clear and to create good image with good words to get sympathy from audiences.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was (1) to identify the lexical differences of Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect in Dharmasraya compared to the standard Minangkabaunese (2) to identify the lexical similarities between Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect and the standard Minangkabaunese. In this paper the researcher used descriptive method; it is possible to compare two dialects so that we can found the differences, the uniqueness of lexical changes, and the vocabulary similarities. From the research that has been done, the researcher used 127 sample data to see the lexical differences and similarities that exist in Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect compared to the standard Minangkabaunese. From the sample the researcher found that Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect often use phoneme /o/ at the first syllable of the word compared to the standard Minangkabaunese that often use phoneme /a/, phoneme /r/ in the standard Minangkabaunese changes to /w/ and /y/ in the middle of the word, and phoneme /a/ changes to /au/ and /iu/ at the end of the word; and from the sample data the researcher also found the similarities in some vocabulary used by Tebing Tinggi sub-dialect and the standard Minangkabaunese. From this paper the researcher hope that this paper can be useful in learning as an additional knowledge in learning Dialectology.

Abstract

This research describes about types of lexical and syntactical stylistic devices found in Mama Dedeh’s preaches in program “Mama dan Aa” in Indosiar. The source of data is transcript from eight videos Mama Dedeh in month January-June 2016 about the vice. From the analysis, Mama Dedeh’s preach uses seven types of lexical stylistic devices, those are interjection, simile, proverb, epigram, oxymoron, metaphor, and quotation and also uses eight types of syntactical stylistic devices, those are inversion, chiasmus, parallelism, repetition, climax, asyndenton, question in narrative and rhetorical question. There are 40 data of lexical stylistic devices found in this research and the most dominant is interjection (21 data) followed by quotation (11), oxymoron (2), simile (2), metaphor (1), proverb (1), and epigram (1). Then, syntactical stylistic devices found in Mama Dedeh’s preach has 76 data and the most dominant is question in narrative (31), followed by repetition (15), rhetorical question (11), parallelism (8), inversion and asyndenton has (4), chiasmus (2), and climax (1). So the most dominant of lexical stylistic device found in Mama Dedeh’s preach is interjection and the most dominant of syntactical stylistic devices is question in narrative.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find impoliteness strategies used by supporters and detractors of Ahok differed by their gender in their online comments based on Culpeper’s theory (1996). This research was descriptive qualitative research based on impoliteness strategies phenomena in written language. The data on this research were words, phrases, and sentences in online comments that contained impoliteness strategies found in social media, Facebook and Instagram, collected from January to October 2017. The instruments of this research were Wi-Fi, laptop, writing equipment, and indicators of impoliteness strategies. The results of analysis showed that from 300 comments collected, there were 584 impoliteness strategies found. The reason why number of strategies found bigger than the data collected is because the commentators mostly performed more than one strategy in one utterance. Four by five strategies found in this research were bald on record, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, and sarcasm or mock politeness. The strategies that were not found was withhold politeness because it only occurred in spoken language. The most used strategies was positive impoliteness. The highest user of positive impoliteness was male detractors (52%).

Abstract

Address terms is the study of addressing people in speech or writing by using a word, phrase, name, title or some combination of these. This research paper is aimed to investigate types and functions of address terms used by people in IPMK-SB “Kampar Students Studying in Padang”. This research paper uses Wardhaugh (2006) and Esmae’li (2011) theories about types and functions of address terms. This study used descriptive qualitative approach supported by quantitative. The result of this research showed that from seven theories of types of address term based on Wardhaugh, there were found only four types of address term used by IPMK-SB. They were special nickname, kinship terms, pet name and title only. The biggest percentage goes to kinship terms (55,38%) folowed by special nickname (37,95%), and pet name (4,62%). The smallest percentage goes to title only (2,05%). The reason why number of types address terms found smaller because the limitation of this research only did in secretariat of IPMK-SB. Then, for the functions, the writer found five functions of address terms based on  Esmae’li and Wardhaugh theories. They were attract people attention, show intimacy, show politeness, show power differential, and reflect identity. The first dominant function of address term was show intimacy (47,69%), followed by attract people attention (37,44%), show politeness (9,23%), and reflect identity (3,59%). The last dominant function of address term was show power differential (2,05%).

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze types of illocutionary act found in novel The Never Girls Bell: Before the Bell by Kiki Thorpe. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research is the utterances of novel The Never Girls Bell: Before the Bell by Kiki Thorpe published in 2016. The data is taken from chapter one, page one until seven. This data would be analyzed based on Searle’s theory about classifications of illocutionary act. There are some types of illocutionary act in this paper; they are representative (informing, asserting, predicting, reporting); directive (asking, requesting, stating), commisive (promising); expressive (liking, complimenting), and declarative. The finding of the data has shown that in novel the highest is representative 28 data or about 50% and the highest representative type is informing. And the second is directive 21 data or about 37, 5% and the highest directive is asking. From the result of the study that the dominant type of illocutionary act is representative and the dominant sub-type of representative is informing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategy of impoliteness used by haters on instagram comment artists using pragmatic approach. The purpose of this study was to find the type of impoliteness strategy used by hater on instagram artists. The data was taken from the comments contained in the instagram lambe_turah account. Lambe _turah account is an instagram account which is now very popular among the people because it concerns the artist's daily life. In addition, this study also analyzed the comparison between male artists and female artists based on the types of impoliteness strategies proposed by Culpeper (1996). The results of this analysis showed that from 200 comments of male and female artists. From the analysis, the writer found 5 strategies of impoliteness, namely (1) bald on record impoliteness, (2) positive impoliteness. (3) Negative impoliteness, (4) sarcasm or mock politeness, (5) withhold politeness. The most used strategies by all comments were positive impoliteness. The highest user of positive impoliteness was Alghazali. It found (32%) on his data. Meanwhile, in Prilly data this strategy found about (28%) on her data as the last most user of impoliteness.

Abstract

This research purposed to analyse the type of word formation process used in advertisement boards. Sources of data obtained from advertisement boards in Padang City. Based on analysis of the data the researcher found advertisement categories that have word formation process that are smartphone, name of shop/company, funiture, course/education institutional, cigarette, event, and job vacancy. From all these categories the researcher classify word formation process into twelve types. The researcher found blending (7%), compounding (15%), borrowing (9%), coinage (9%), initialization (11%), acronym (4%), clipping (15%), back formation (5%), inflection (11%), derivation (7%), onomatopoeia (2%), cliticization (5%). The result of this research indicate advertisement category that many found in advertisment boards in Padang city is name of shop/company. And the advertisement category that rarely found in advertisment boards in Padang city is job vacancy. In addition, based on analysis of the data show that compounding and inflection are types that many used in advertisment boards in Padang city. And type that rarely used in advetisement boards is onomatopoeia.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  Agusmita, Cut Merya. 2018. An Analysis of Conversational Maxim found in “The Monster House” movie script. Paper. Padang. English Department. Faculty of Language and Art. UNP. Conversational maxim is a set of rule or guideline in conversation which was originally proposed by HP Grice in 1975. He categorizes the maxim into four types which consist of maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. These rules are indeed useful for the speakers and interlocutors to make conversation run well. In this paper, the conversation or dialogue in the movie script became the source of data, and the script of the Monster House movie was chosen. Furthermore, the aim of this paper was to find out the type of maxim which is mostly violated in the script. The data were analyzed based on theory proposed by Grice. The results of the analysis revealed that almost all the main characters in the script violated the conversational maxim. Moreover, from all the utterances uttered by the characters, it was found that there were 54 utterances which violated the conversational maxim. From the 54 violated utterances, it was found that the percentages for each type of violation were 23.1% for maxim of quantity, 44,4% for maxim of relation, 9.3% for maxim of quality, 16,7% for maxim of manner, and 7,4% for combination of maxim quantity and relation.  From these results, it can be concluded that the type of maxim that was mostly violated in the script of The Monster House movie was maxim of relation. Keywords:    Conversational maxim, Maxim violation, The Monster House movie script
